Practicing on a Trackman simulator is far more effective than just hitting balls on a regular range. The key is to use the data to focus on specific aspects of your game with targeted drills. Here are some of the best tips and drills to help you use a Trackman simulator to improve your golf game.
Driver: Maximize Distance and Control
For your driver, the goal is to optimize launch angle and spin rate to get the most out of your club speed. A common issue is a negative angle of attack, which is when you hit down on the ball. This can lead to a slice and a significant loss of distance. The ideal driver swing has a positive angle of attack, hitting up on the ball.
  • Attack Angle Drill: Place a tee in the ground a few inches in front of your ball. The goal is to hit the ball and then the second tee, or at least have your club bottom out after the ball. Practice this until you can consistently get a positive angle of attack on your Trackman data. This drill retrains your mind and body to hit up on the ball, which will increase your launch angle and ball speed for more distance.
  • Smash Factor Drill: Focus on maximizing your Smash Factor (Ball Speed / Club Speed). This metric measures the efficiency of your impact. The goal for a driver is to get as close to 1.50 as possible. If your Smash Factor is low, it means you're not hitting the sweet spot. A low Smash Factor with high club speed indicates a loss of energy. Use impact tape on the club face to see where you're making contact and work on hitting the center of the face.

Irons: Improve Ball-Striking Consistency
With irons, the key is to achieve a consistent downward strike and proper club path for better contact and accuracy. A common mistake is a significant out-to-in club path, which leads to a slice.
  • Club Path Drill: Place an alignment stick on the ground a few inches behind the ball, parallel to your target line. Place a second stick in the ground just outside of the ball on your target line. The goal is to swing your club between the two sticks. Your Trackman data will give you a club path number; work to get this number as close to zero as possible for straighter shots. You can also intentionally swing to get a positive (in-to-out) or negative (out-to-in) number to practice hitting a draw or fade.
  • Low Point Drill: Your low point is where the club bottoms out on the ground during the swing. For irons, you want your low point to be in front of the ball. Place a towel or headcover about a foot in front of the ball and try to hit the ball without hitting the object behind it. Trackman will show a negative low point number for a proper strike. This drill helps you hit the ball first and then the turf, ensuring solid contact.

Wedges: Master Distance Control
Wedge play is all about precise distance control and consistent contact. Most amateur players struggle to hit their wedges to specific yardages.
  • The Clock Face Drill: This simple drill helps you learn your carry distances for different swing lengths. For example, a "9 o'clock" swing might be a half-swing where your hands go back to hip height, a "10 o'clock" to your stomach, and a "12 o'clock" to your shoulder. Use Trackman to dial in the exact carry distance for each "clock" position. Once you know these numbers, you can play a game of "Wedge Ladder" where you try to hit a specific distance with a wedge, moving up or down the ladder by 5-10 yards each shot. The immediate feedback from Trackman will make this process more efficient.
